The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for 3 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Monday, as the track of an impending winter weather event has shifted south and is forecast to bring more snow to the Shore area than previous expected.

According to the warning statement issued by the NWS’s office in Mount Holly, heavy wet snow and sleet expected to move into the area Sunday afternoon. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 4 to 7 inches are expected.

Rain and snow will develop Sunday afternoon, then change to all snow into the evening. The snow should mix with sleet from southeast to northwest by later Sunday evening, with even some areas changing to rain especially closer to the coast, which could limit northern Ocean County’s totals to 3-5 inches. Any rain or wintry mix will change back to snow before ending early Monday morning.

The height of the storm will strike between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., the NWS said.

“While the precipitation will end before the Monday morning commute, hazardous conditions should still be occurring from the earlier heavy wet snow and sleet,” the statement went on to say.
