Check Out Seaside Park’s New Patriotic Water Tower

One of those “Down the Shore” traditions in New Jersey has always, uniquely, been its water tanks (or towers, as they’re more commonly known).

Like Ortley Beach’s dolphins or Wildwood’s famous “beach ball in the sky,” Seaside Park’s newly-painted water tower comes with the borough’s own touch of local pride – in this case, a patriotic design with the town’s “08752” ZIP code blended in for good measure. Crews are continuing work on the tower’s interior and on some portions of the project’s exterior, but the most visible portion of the $1,041,000 project to repaint the tank is complete. While the project included the repainting of the exterior of the tank, the bulk of the work occurs inside the tank itself, and it is vital to keep the tank safe and viable to hold the borough’s drinking water.

“This is a somewhat large project,” said Borough Administrator Karen Kroon at the time a contract was awarded for the project. “It’s not just painting the exterior – it’s the interior, too. The structure itself is rusted.”

Work hasn’t always gone smoothly. In April, during a spate of coastal storms, the protective shroud around the tank to protect the surrounding area from chips and paint spray was torn loose in a storm and had to be refitted. But the work was completed quickly and the project largely moved forward as it normally would have.

The Decatur Avenue water tower is one of two tanks in town – the other is located on 12th Avenue and is not part of the project under design. The tank on Decatur Avenue last underwent major maintenance in 2007, Kroon said.
