A Lavallette man is in custody after allegedly staging a home invasion robbery, fleeing the scene and jumping into Barnegat Bay to avoid police who were following him.
The incident took place at about 9:55 p.m. Monday, Sgt. Justin Lamb said, when police received a 911 call from a borough resident on Washington Avenue stating a home invasion was in progress. When police arrived, the victims – who were not identified – said the man confronted them in their living room after forcibly breaking in.
The man, identified later as Brian Schremmer, 28, of 105 Jersey City Avenue, was found after Ptl. Adam LaCicero, Officer Ryan Crisalli, and Officer Harry Paul, rushed toward the area of Lavallette Avenue and the bay front where the suspect was last seen. Minutes later they located the man running, said Lamb.
The officers pursued Schremmer for several hundred yards until he became caught on the edge of a bulkhead, Lamb said. While attempting to place him into custody, Schremmer alleged resisted arrest and tried to flee into the bay, causing minor injuries to LaCicero.
Schremmer was ultimately rescued from the bay and placed under arrest. He was subsequently charged with burglary, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer and throwing bodily fluids at a police officer.
