Two firefighters were hospitalized – one after suffering a heart attack – while fighting a raging house fire in Mantoloking Saturday night.
Firefighters found the home at 219 Channel Lane “full engulfed” when they arrived at about 6:15 p.m., the Mantoloking Fire Company said in a statement.
“Officers quickly determined that there was no one in the home,” the statement said.
Fire companies from Point Pleasant Beach and Borough, Bay Head, Brick, Mantoloking and South Wall all responded to assist, the statement said.
Mantoloking Fire Chief Larry Gilman suffered a heart attack during the call and was taken to Ocean Medical Center, Brick, where he remains in the intensive care unit, though his condition is stable. A Bay Head firefighter, whose name was not released, was treated and released from Ocean Medical Center.
The Ocean County Fire Marshall is handling the investigation, the statement said. The fire company is asking local residents to stay away from the scene so investigators can complete their assignment.
