With a planning board application so delicious, how could the result be anything but approval?
The Lavallette planning board has granted its seal of approval to the new digs envisioned for Colonial Bakery, the near-legendary bake shop that closed its doors after Labor Day when its lease was not renewed in its previous location. The board voted in favor of granting approval for the shop to reopen at 1903 Grand Central Avenue, midway between Jersey City and New Jersey avenues along Route 35 North.
A rendering of the prospective design of the shop was provided by Tokarski Millemann Architects, of Wall Township, which designed what will be a new building for the Colonial Bakery and a three-bedroom apartment. The current structure on the site, an older residential home, will be demolished. Colonial has said its new store is expected to be ready by May 2025, in time for the busy summer season.
“We’re designing a space that’s not just about delicious pastries, but also community and comfort, featuring a three-bedroom apartment with dedicated parking,” the architectural firm said in a statement. “As we facilitate Colonial Bakery’s ambition to re-open this year, we will ensure that every architectural detail reflects the brand’s heritage, commitment to craftsmanship, and the warm, communal spirit central to their ethos, all while infusing the “Everyday Exceptional” into the very fabric of the design to enrich the everyday experience for all visitors.”
Construction is expected to begin in the spring.
Colonial Bakery was previously located just across the street from the new shop. The bakery also operates a “north” location at 3091 Route 35 North and Joseph Street in Ocean Beach, and shares ownership ties with the equally-beloved Mueller’s Bakery in Bay Head.
Colonial opened in 1998 and is now a true family business with multiple generations behind the counter.
