Colonial Bakery, which shuttered its “southern” location in Lavallette following the 2024 summer season after its lease was not renewed, is seeking planning approval to open a new location nearby.

The Lavallette planning board is scheduled to hear an application at its Dec. 18, 2024 meeting on a proposal by the owners of 1903 Grand Central Avenue to open a bakery at that location in addition to using a portion of the building for a residential purpose. According to state tax records, the owners of the property are Marie and Brian O’Neill, the proprietors of Colonial Bakery’s two locations, and partners in Mueller’s Bakery in Bay Head.

According to a public notice, the existing house on the property will be demolished and a new building for the Colonial Bakery and a three-bedroom apartment will be constructed. Two parking spaces for the apartment are provided in the rear.

“As a mixed-use building, no variances are required,” the notice said; the O’Neills are represented by Lavallette attorney Michele Donato in the matter.

Colonial Bakery was previously located at 1906 Grand Central Avenue, just across the street from the newly-proposed shop, which would be positioned between The Parlor (formerly Salty’s) and the Sand Dollar Pancake House restaurant. The building is located on Grand Central (Route 35 North) near Jersey City Avenue. In a message posted to its social media account last summer, Colonial said it planned on returning for the summer of 2025 in a new location.

Colonial Bakery also operates a “north” location at 3091 Route 35 North and Joseph Street in Ocean Beach.

The meeting will be held Dec. 18, 2024, at 5 p.m. at borough hall.
