Seaside Heights officials on Wednesday voted to acquire a residential property situated in the center of town, beside the large municipal parking lot on Grant Avenue.
The borough council voted unanimously to purchase what is currently a multi-family rental property at 27 Grant Avenue. The borough expects to pay $750,000 for the building and the parcel of land, said Mayor Anthony Vaz. According to county tax records, the structure was built in 1950 and is situated on a 40-by-100 foot lot.
The borough has yet to decide how the property will be used, however its location next to the parking facility could prove particularly useful as the borough has commissioned a long-term parking study that will examine, among other options, the potential for a parking deck to be built somewhere in town. The building could also be rehabilitated and house some function of the municipal government or the tourism industry. It could also serve certain needs during coastal storms.
“We’re not looking to sell it to a developer,” said Vaz. “We could turn it into something very nice for the community.”
The property last changed hands in 2001, according to tax records. Vaz said that, unlike some other properties in town that have been acquired in recent years, there was no condemnation or eminent domain proceedings related to the purchase. The owner was a willing seller.
