The Upper Shores (Lavallette) branch of the Ocean County Library system will host an award-winning Philadelphia Flower Show presenter who will make a presentation alongside the borough’s Friends of Lavallette Beautification (FLB) group.
Daniel Chomuk, a 2022 Philadelphia Flower Show award winner, will describe his experiences in a program for the branch, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 29. The horticultural expert is a close relative of borough resident June Chomuk, one of FLB’S more than 70 members. After winning recognition by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in the multiple-day event, he returned there this year by invitation.
Established in 2004, FLB consists of volunteers who represent residents, the borough council, planning board, and Lavallette Business Association. Its goals include maintaining the Grand Central Avenue Streetscape and targeting ideal spots for trees, flowers, or grass.
According to Pat Marrone, a chairperson of the group for its entire existence, the $15 annual membership fee goes a long way to keep parks, ball fields and other municipal space picturesque.
“We purchase plants, shrubs, and trees,” she said. “Then we tend them in cooperation with the Department of Public Works. Weeding, mulching gardens, and new plantings are part of our responsibilities. Most recently, we added 12 pear trees to a ballfield.
FLB membership is not required to attend the free program, but attendees are asked to register at www.theoceancountylibrary.org/events. For more information, visit the Upper Shores Branch, 112 Jersey City Avenue, Lavallette, or call 732-793-3996.
