Why Did the Seal Cross Route 35? Regardless, Local Police Were There to Help

During the summer, Route 35 is home to a small army of crossing guards who keep beachgoers safe on their way to and from the ocean. This time of year, it’s up to Brick Township’s full-time police officers to help out in a pinch – and they were there at the right time Monday!

A harbor seal swam up to the beach in the township’s South Mantoloking section to take a rest from swimming in the ocean – not particularly uncommon this time of year – but the inquisitive marine mammal ultimately decided to do some sightseeing. The trip included a crossing of Route 35, whose lanes tend to stay busy all year.

“Earlier this evening officers found a seal trying to cross Route 35 in Brick,” a department spokesperson said. “Officers were able to stop traffic and safely allow him to cross the highway.”

The officers made the decision to call the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine to make sure the seal was healthy. Volunteers from the center decided to take the seal under their care.
