A tell-tale sign of fall has arrived.
Traffic lights up and down Route 35 on Ocean County’s northern barrier island were switched to “blinking” mode Monday, an annual tradition ushered in by a lack of summer volume and gridlock.
The amber (yellow) lights run along the state highway, while red blinking lights notify motorists to stop before turning from side streets. A few lights remain active, such as Washington Avenue in Lavallette, due to the proximity of the intersection to the borough’s elementary school, municipal complex and post office. Most lights in Seaside Heights also remain active year-round.
Speed limits had already been raised last week in some areas. On Route 35 South, speed limits were raised to 45 m.p.h. in much of Brick Township, portions of Toms River and most of Lavallette. Northbound, speed limits were raised to 40 m.p.h. in portions of Brick Township.
