Brick to Take Over Mantoloking’s Code Enforcement Duties

Brick Township has entered into a shared services agreement with Mantoloking borough to provide code enforcement services.

The Brick township council voted unanimously this week to approve the agreement, under which Brick will take over code enforcement duties as they pertain to property maintenance and similar violations. Mantoloking will retain its own building inspector, whose duties include certifying the safety of structures and making determinations as to habitability following natural disasters, fires or accidents.

“There are only about 600 residential homes and no commercial construction in Mantoloking, so it’s not a tremendous amount of workload,” said Daniel Newman, head of the township’s building department. “Mainly things like debris, weeds, mowing lawns.”

Newman said given the seasonal nature of Mantoloking and the tendency of such residents to utilize commercial landscaping services will likely result in few property maintenance complaints emanating from the small borough.

“We have to pass through Mantoloking to get to the barrier island section of town, so it makes sense, and we will be the code enforcement officer for the borough,” said Township Administrator Joanne Bergin.

Brick Township inspectors will be utilized on an as-needed basis for $45 per hour, with additional or evening hours billed at $67 per hour. The resolution does not have a set expiration or renewal date, meaning either party could choose to exit pursuant to terms agreed upon by the two towns.
