Seaside Heights is warning would-be swimmers that no lifeguards are on duty and swimming in the ocean is prohibited.
The warning comes after the borough fire department’s water rescue team had to be called to the oceanfront to take part in multiple rescues Sunday, along with colleagues from other local towns.
“Ocean swimming is prohibited,” the announcement said. “Lifeguards have not yet started for the season. Any person who enters the ocean will be issued a summons that will result in a fine, incarceration, or a combination of both.”
Surfers who are actively surfing are exempt.
A rip current advisory is also in effect, officials said. The National Weather Service said rip currents would be strong at least through 5 p.m. Monday.
