Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Jersey Shore, ‘Fay’ Could Bring 50mph Winds

The formation of Tropical Storm Fay has prompted the National Hurricane Center to issue t Tropical Storm Warning from Cape May New Jersey northward to Watch Hill, R.I., the agency announced Thursday evening.

Fay is currently located 195 south of Ocean City, Md., and moving north at 7 m.p.h. It is packing 45 m.p.h. sustained winds; the minimum wind speed for named tropical storms is 39 m.p.h. A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours.

The National Weather Service office in Mount Holly issued an advisory stating the storm would pack winds between 39 and 57 m.p.h. with occasional strong gusts, though sustained winds will likely see a maximum speed of 50 m.p.h. A flash flood watch was simultaneously issued, with forecasters predicting between 1-3 inches of rain with the storm, with some areas seeing locally higher amounts.

Seas will run 7-8 feet Friday and Friday night, according to the NWS marine forecast, with east winds during the daytime and southwest winds at night blowing 35 to 45 knots.

As for timing, the flash flood warning is in place from 4 a.m. Friday through 8 p.m. Friday. That is when the bulk of the storm is expected to impact the Shore area. By Saturday morning, the storm should be moving out of the area, and skies will be partly sunny with a high of 83 degrees and the chance of a thunderstorm.
