In a rare contested race on Ocean County’s northern barrier island, a Lavallette councilwoman bested her opponent to remain on the borough’s governing body.
Joanne Filippone, a Republican, won 467 votes compared to 389 for her opponent, Matthew Schlosser, a local realtor who ran as an independent. Incumbent Republican councilman James Borowski also won re-elected, as did Mayor Walter LaCicero, who ran unopposed.
“It was a personal vendetta that had nothing to do with me, but I was apparently the target,” said Filippone. “I’m so grateful to the people of Lavallette. We’re going to move forward.”
