Located at the foot of the Route 37 bridge at the eastbound entrance to Pelican Island, a new sign directs those in search of Ortley Beach and Lavallette to the proper lane. The problem: there is no such town as “Lavalette.”

The sign was erected over the last few weeks and immediately caught the eyes of borough residents who brought up the issue at last week’s meeting of the Lavallette borough council. Borough officials said they noticed the sign, too, and were planning to reach out to the state Department of Transportation for a correction.
