March will come in like a lion at the Jersey Shore, with a major weather system set to deliver inches of rain after an already-wet February.

The National Weather Service is tracking a significant storm system that is expected to develop over the next few days, arriving on Thursday night to the local area and lasting through Friday. The NWS’s office in Mount Holly has already warned that between 1-2 inches of rain may fall, with more in isolated locations. There is also the possibility of coastal flooding.

“It probably will result in significant rises for a few small streams, especially those that empty into the Atlantic ocean since astronomically high tide cycles may alter normal river drainage,” an NWS statement said.

The good news is that warm temperatures will ensure the storm is a rain event only – no snow or other wintry precipitation is currently anticipated.

Temperatures this week are expected to remain mild. Monday’s high will be 54 degrees, followed by highs of 55, 57 and 48 between Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
