No one was injured when a device – reportedly a pipe bomb – detonated at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday along the route of a Marine Corps 5K race.
Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, said the area is on lock down while bomb dogs search for additional devices. There is a report of at least one other device, which the New Jersey State Police bomb squad will make safe, Della Fave added.
“Please avoid the area,” he said.
The device was placed along the planned route for the Marine Corps Semper Five run scheduled for Saturday morning. The start of the run was delayed, “which thankfully avoided a large number of runners in the area,” Della Fave said.
The Ocean County Prosecutors Office Arson Unit is on scene and will be assisted by FBI, ATF and NJ State Police Bomb Squad.
