UPDATE: Officials now say the Thomas A. Mathis Bridge has been reopened to vehicular traffic.
Previous Story:
Officials say a “long term” closure of the Thomas A. Mathis drawbridge, which carries eastbound Route 37 into Seaside Heights, has resulted in a traffic diversion.
The bridge is currently stuck in the “up” position and cannot be closed.
Christopher Vaz, Seaside Heights Borough Administrator, said eastbound traffic onto the barrier island has been diverted onto the J. Stanley Tunney Bridge, a fixed-span bridge that carries westbound traffic off the island.
The Tunney bridge is now carrying both eastbound and westbound traffic over Barnegat Bay, to and from the island.
