Things were simpler in the 1990s. There was no social media, cell phones were few and far between, and boardwalk building codes weren’t the subject of hours-long debates.
Still, those reporting the news back then maintained – as is often maintained to this day – that the Seaside Heights boardwalk was (even then) a throwback of its own to a simpler time. CBS News reporter Bill Geist visited the boardwalk in the early 1990s (the exact year isn’t known) to profile the town and the attractions that, to this day, have people coming back again and again.
The video also contains some television history. Views will notice that the report aired on WCAU in Philadelphia, which was then a CBS affiliate. Modern viewers know WCAU as NBC10. The station changed its affiliation from CBS to NBC in 1995 after Westinghouse sold CBS. The NBC station, KYW 3, became the CBS affiliate on the same day.
A hat-tip to Joe Verderosa and the ever-popular Seaside Heights Boardwalk Facebook group where the video surfaced.
